About this test

Ghosting happens when pixels change colour too slowly, leaving a faint trail behind moving objects. Too much overdrive causes the opposite: a bright or dark halo. Three backgrounds and five speeds make it easy to compare overdrive settings on your monitor and see how refresh rate affects motion clarity.

How to use this test

  1. Choose a speed around 960 px/s and switch to full screen.
  2. Track the saucer with your eyes rather than staring at one spot.
  3. Change the overdrive or response time setting on your monitor and compare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best overdrive setting?

Usually the middle setting. The highest setting often adds visible overshoot halos.

Why does motion look smoother at higher speeds on a 144 Hz monitor?

More refreshes per second mean smaller jumps between frames, which reduces perceived blur.
