Touchscreen problems come from dirt, screen protectors, charger noise, settings or damage. Mapping which areas respond tells you which of these you are facing.

Common causes

  • Dirt, moisture or a thick screen protector
  • Charger electrical noise causing ghost touches
  • Touch input disabled or driver issues
  • Cracked digitiser or loose connector

Step-by-step fix

  1. Map dead zones — Use the grid mode of the touchscreen test and fill every cell to find areas that do not respond.
  2. Clean the screen — Wipe with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and dry your hands.
  3. Remove the protector — Peel off thick or bubbled screen protectors and test again.
  4. Unplug the charger — Cheap chargers can cause ghost touches. Test with the device on battery.
  5. Restart and update — Restart, then install system updates. On Windows, disable and re-enable the HID-compliant touch screen in Device Manager.
  6. Calibrate — On Windows use Tablet PC Settings → Calibrate. Phones can run touch diagnostics in their support app.
Tip: If the dead zone is a straight line or along an edge, it is usually a hardware fault in the digitiser.

Still not fixed?

Cracks, dead lines and spreading dead zones need a screen or digitiser replacement.
