Webcam Not Working? How to Fix a Black or Missing Camera

A webcam that shows a black image or “no camera found” is almost always blocked by a permission, held by another app or missing a driver. Work through these steps in order and test after each one.

Common causes

  • Camera permission is blocked in the browser or operating system
  • Another app such as Zoom, Teams or OBS is already using the camera
  • A physical privacy shutter or keyboard camera key is off
  • Outdated or corrupted camera driver

Step-by-step fix

  1. Check the privacy shutter — Many laptops have a sliding cover or an F-key with a camera icon. Open it before anything else.
  2. Allow camera in the browser — Click the lock icon next to the address, set Camera to Allow and reload the page.
  3. Close other camera apps — Quit Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS and camera utilities completely, including from the system tray.
  4. Check system privacy settings — On Windows open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and allow desktop apps. On macOS open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable your browser.
  5. Select the right camera — If you have more than one camera, choose the correct one in the webcam test or the app's settings.
  6. Reinstall the driver — In Windows Device Manager, right-click your camera under Cameras, choose Uninstall device and restart. Windows reinstalls it automatically.
Tip: Try the camera in a different USB port, ideally directly on the computer rather than through a hub.

Still not fixed?

If the camera still does not appear in Device Manager or System Information after a restart, test it on another computer. A camera that fails everywhere is a hardware fault.
